Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area, South Tract
address: Old Tunica Road, Tunica, LA 70775

Directions: From Baton Rouge, take Hwy 61 North through St. Francisville. Turn left onto Hwy 66 (the road to Angola).

From Natchez, take Highway 61 South to St. Francisville, Turn right onto Hwy 66 (the road to Angola)

To enter through the East entrance, travel 7.7 miles on Hwy 66 and turn left onto LA 968 (next left after a Mobil station). Take the right fork in 968 and follow the winding road (Old Tunica) all the way down (about three miles) until you hit gravel. There are numerous parking areas within the WMA, including one at this entrance.

To enter through the West entrance, go several miles further down Hwy 66 until you reach an Exxon station near then end of Hwy 66, 2.5 miles away from the entrance to Angola. Immediately after the Exxon station (before another small bridge), turn left onto Old Tunica Road. There are numerous parking areas within the WMA.

Google Map of Tunica Hills WMA South Tract entrances (through Old Tunica Road). Click on one of the entrance markers to get Google directions to the WMA.

The photos that follow were taken beginning from the Western entrance, moving East, which is the harder direction to travel on the gravel road, and the direction that the Rouge Roubaix road race takes.

Left immediately after the Exxon on Hwy 66, Old Tunica Road enters a cattle farm.

This is potentially a breathtaking trail. It starts out as doubletrack for about a half-mile, then switches to rugged singletrack. That bluffed entryway is full of fallen trees thanks to Gustav. No matter, there are several reroutes that take you up and down the berms, which is cool.

There is just too much fallen timber and sticks on this trail for it to be ridable for any length of time right now. The descent pictured above is wild though, try letting go of the brakes on that one!

The climb back up is a hike, and beyond that some more challenges I haven't yet explored. Sticks really messed up my derailleur and it was getting dark.

Wow, did this one tonight, the most fun I've ever had on doubletrack. It's about a 5-mile double-T (you return on the same trail but it forks in separate directions). The climbs are at the level of Clear Springs, very challenging and technical in spots.

The downhills are very fun and very "Tunica." It has full berms up into the bluffs on either side. You can ride horizontal on some curves and hit the stair step dropoffs going downhill.

Only downside to this trail are the treacherous sticks. You've got to watch those in all the hills. So far Tunica Hills sticks have broken a derailleur hanger, a derailleur adjustment pin (bad!), and tonight my hydraulic brake cable on the back was ripped off (bad, bad!!).
